SUGAR LAND – After 56 regular season games and advancing one spot in the Southland Conference standings on the final weekend, Sam Houston State enters the league tournament as the three-seed.
The Bearkats, who finished the season 36-20 overall and 19-11 in conference, will face six-seed Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday at 9 a.m. from Constellation Field in the opening game of the tournament.
General admission day passes are on sale for $19 while all tournament passes are available for $60 by calling the Sugar Land Skeeters at (281) 240-4487 or visiting SugarLandSkeeters.com. The double-elimination tournament will take place Wednesday through Saturday.
The teams will be placed into two brackets with the two bracket winners meeting in the winner-take-all championship game Saturday, May 27 at 6 p.m. The winner of the tournament will receive the Southland Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
If Sam Houston wins its opening game, the Bearkats will go on to face the winner of New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday at 4 p.m. A defeat would put the team in the loser's bracket against either the Privateers or Lions at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
Sam Houston is seeking its third-straight appearance in the Southland Conference Tournament title game and second consecutive championship. A season ago, the team opened up with wins against Central Arkansas and Stephen F. Austin before outing the Lumberjacks with an 8-2, elimination-game win in route to a 7-4 victory against Southeastern Louisiana for the title.
