FRISCO – For the second straight week a Sam Houston State Bearkat has claimed Southland Conference Hitter of the Week honors as Hannah Marino snagged the award on Sunday, per a release by conference officials.
Marino helped the Kats secure a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament over the weekend in a sweep of Houston Baptist. The senior had a hit in each of the three games and reached safely in seven of her 10 plate appearances. The Huntsville native scored twice and had a homer in the series opener, en route to a 3-0 Sam Houston win.
She then turned around and went 2-for-4 as part of a 17-hit explosion for the Kats in the second game of Friday's doubleheader. Marino was then the difference in Saturday's series finale, reaching base all three times and driving in all three Bearkat runs with singles in her first two plate appearances.
It is the first such honor for Marino with the weekend raising her average to .352 for the season. She leads the team with a .593 slugging percentage and now has four homers and 21 RBI for the year in just 54 at-bats.
Marino and the Bearkats earned the No. 4 seed in this week's Southland Conference Tournament and will kick off the event on Wednesday when they take on host Central Arkansas in the opening round.
