HUNTSVILLE – For a second-straight season, a Sam Houston State starting pitcher has been named Freshman All-American in route to playing a major role in Sam Houston State's run to the postseason.
Hayden Wesneski has been named freshman all-America by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, the publication announced Wednesday. The Cypress product is tied for first nationally among freshmen with 10 victories while posting a 3.80 ERA in 13 starts and 18 appearances.
In his first season with the program, Wesneski helped fill the void when Riley Gossett, a 2016 Freshman All-American, went down with a season-ending injury prior to the 2017 campaign.
The Cy Fair High School product won his first five starts in a Bearkat uniform and picked up three victories against top-25 opponents this season. In his last appearance, Wesneski held Arizona in check at the NCAA Lubbock Regional, logging six innings of relief while scattering seven hits and allowing one run.
The freshman will be relied on once again this weekend when Sam Houston appears in its first NCAA Super Regional. The Bearkats take on Florida State from Tallahassee. The best-of-three game series begins on Saturday at 11 a.m. on ESPN2.
QUOTEABLES:
Head coach Matt Deggs on how valuable Hayden Wesneski has been…
“He's really stepped up for us … taking the ball on Sunday or taking the ball on Tuesday. With the loss of Gossett, it's really been felt. It has allowed some of these freshmen to emerge, step up and make a difference. He is a guy that has really capitalized on the opportunity along with Miko and several others. He put up some really good numbers for us.”
Head coach Matt Deggs on having two freshman All-Americans the last two years…
“I am really proud of him because he works really hard. He has a lot of poise. He is a great teammate. It's a great honor to have him this year and Gossett last year. There might be another down the road on another list. Jay Sirianni does such a great job with these pitchers. It's no accident that there have been two freshmen All-Americans the last two years and both have been pitchers. That is a testament to Jay and how hard he works with these guys and how much he gets out of them.”
