
Bearkat Golf Continues in Hawaii

HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State men's and women's golf teams are set to close out the fall season at separate tournaments, next week in Hawaii. The men are set to compete in the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational (Oct 28-30) in Princeville, Hawaii, and the women will take part in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational (Oct. 30-31) in Kapolei, Hawaii.

Gearing up for its fifth tournament of the season, the men's team looks to improve after taking 11th at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 16. William Holcomb was the highest finisher for Sam Houston, tying 17th overall, and Noah Steele followed in a tie for 31st.
Holcomb leads the crew with a 2.94 par three scoring average and 37 birdies this season. Freshman Grayson blunt has tallied a team-leading three eagles so far this season and has collected 23 birdies. Austen Christiansen leads the squad in par 4 scoring (4.06) while Steele leads the squad in par 5 scoring (4.79).
Hoping to continue its success, the women's squad enters the Rainbow Wahine Invitational after strong individual performances at the UT Arlington Invitational. Senior Jenna Phillips came away with her second individual title of the season.
Shooting the lowest round of the tournament, Phillips used a 67-stroke effort in the final round to claim the individual title after ending the opening day in a tie for sixth place. She picked up back-to-back birdies on the third and fourth hole and collected three others on holes eight, 11 and 13. The senior led the field in par four scoring and finished the invitational with a total of eight birdies.
Hanna Alberto finished four strokes behind Phillips and tied for third with an overall score of 219. Her lowest-scoring round of the invitational, Alberto carded a 72 on the final day with the help of three birdies. She led the team with nine birdies over the two-day event and averaged 4.78 in par five scoring.
Phillips leads the Kats in par three scoring (3.02) while Alberto paces the squad in par four (4.09) and par five (4.71) scoring. Alberto has collected 33 birdies and one eagle this season and Phillips follows closely with 30 birdies.
