HUNTSVILLE – Riding a two-match winning streak, the Sam Houston women's tennis team plays host to New Mexico State and UT-Rio Grande Valley Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Both matches feature noon first serves but will be played at different sites. The Bearkats and Aggies will match up at Walden Racquet Club in Montgomery while UTRGV and Sam Houston meet at the Kats' regular home site at the McAdams Tennis Center.
The 2018 Sam Houston squad blends experience and youth with four seniors in the top six and a promising group of newcomers stepping up.
Fabienne Gettwart, Khee Yen Wee, Carrie Casey and Mila Milanovic all are veterans of three seasons of college tennis. Sophomore transfer Lusince Chobanyan has proven to be a talented addition to the line-up as well. Freshmen Sahaja Yamalapalli and Roos Gerritsen further strengthen the squad.
“Our newcomers are doing well,” Rob Hubbard said. “Roos has just been with us a little bit more than a month and is still adjusting. Sahaja and Roos are looking good in doubles. The seniors are providing us with great leadership. They are raising their levels.”
Chobanyan, a transfer from UT-Arlington, is undefeated in four singles matches. She earned Southland Conference “Player of the Week” honors after winning at number six in road matches at Texas A&M and Houston two weeks ago. Casey stands 4-1 in singles and was an honorable mention selection in last Monday's Southland Player of the Week voting.
Gettwart and Yamalapalli sport 3-2 records in top positions. Both players have been runners-up in the league's Player of the Week results this season.
SERIES VS. NEW MEXICO STATE
The Sam Houston and New Mexico State women have met three times on the tennis court with the Aggies winning each match all in Las Cruces. New Mexico State won 8-1 in 1995, 9-0 in 1999 and 5-2 in 2015.
SERIES VS. UTRGV
Sam Houston and UTRGV have met 22 times in the 35-year history of Bearkat women's tennis. SHSU holds a 14-8 advantage in the series. The pair split their last two meetings with UTRGV winning 4-3 in Huntsville in 2015 and Sam Houston taking a 5-2 decision in Edinburg last spring.
