The Sam Houston State bowlers are back in action this weekend, and once again, they won't have very far to travel.
Friday will be the first day of the SFA Stormin' Ladyjack Classic at Copperfield Bowl in Houston.
“This is a nice stretch of the schedule for us, because this will be our second straight tournament in Texas,” said head coach Brad Hagen. “We travel so much over the course of the season, it is nice to be able to stay close to home for a few weeks.”
Once again the Kats, ranked No. 5 in the latest NTCA top 25 poll, will face a loaded field with many of the top teams in the country, including the top five and eight of the top 10 teams.
“These are all teams we see throughout the season, so we are familiar with them all,” Hagen said. “Once again, it will be a great opportunity for us to continue to build on what is already a great resume as we move toward the Southland Championships and hopefully another trip to the NCAA Championships.”
Pool play will begin Friday at 9:30 with the first of five, five-game baker matches. The format shifts on Saturday with five traditional team matches to wrap up pool play. Sunday morning will feature the best-of-seven baker matches in the bracket play.
The Kats have had success in this event in the past, beating the hosts SFA for third place last season, also at Copperfield Bowl. In the 2016 event, the Bearkats finished 5th, knocking off Vanderbilt in Sunday's bracket play. The Kats have the third-most wins in tournament history with 29, just one back of leaders Nebraska and Vanderbilt.
The Bearkats are coming off a third-place victory at the PVU Invitational in Arlington. They haven't finished outside the top 6 in any tournament this season and have claimed a pair of team titles.
