HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkat softball team will take its non-conference show back on the road this weekend when it travels to the DFW Metroplex for three games at the UTA Maverick Tournament in Arlington.
All games will be available to be followed via live stats or with live updates by following @BearkatsSB on Twitter.
The tournament was originally scheduled to be four games stretched across Saturday and Sunday for Sam Houston, but the likelihood of inclement weather caused and early alteration for the weekend slate. The Kats will now play DePaul once on Saturday afternoon before a pair of games on Sunday, beginning with a rematch vs DePaul at 10 a.m. and ending with a 3 p.m. meeting with UT Arlington. The Bearkats enter the weekend at just 2-7 after two tough weekends to open the year. They dropped the first four games of last week's Bearkat Softball Classic in Huntsville before closing out the weekend on a high note with a 7-3 win over Northern Colorado.
They are hitting just .212 through their first nine games, but have found a number of bright spots for a young team featuring six underclassmen among its top nine hitters early in the year. Freshman Brooke Malia currently leads the team with a .292 average along with a pair of homers and six RBI. As a team the Kats have already connected on five long balls while 15 of its hits as a team have gone for extra bases.
The Blue Demons have gotten off to an 8-2 start to their season, winning all five games on opening weekend before taking the final three of last weekend's Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C.
Meanwhile the Mavericks won six of their first eight games to open the season before falling last week to North Florida and Jacksonville in consecutive games to close out last weekend's tournament in Florida.
