HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston softball team plays host to the University of the Incarnate Word in the first Southland Conference weekend series of the 2018 season for both teams.
Sam Houston brings a 6-13 record into the contest. The Bearkats have faced an early season schedule that includes softball powers like Washington, Florida State, Texas A&M and Mississippi State. Along the way, the Kats have picked up victories over Portland State, Northern Colorado, UT-Arlington, Mercer and Alcorn State. Incarnate Word stands 3-8 in non-conference action and is coming off a mid-week loss to Texas A&M.
Outfielder Megan McDonald and infielder Brooke Malia lead Sam Houston at the plate. McDonald, a sophomore from Georgetown, is hitting .286 with six runs batted in. Malia, a freshman from Houston, owns a .250 average that includes three home runs.
Lindsey McLeod, an honorable mention All-Southland selection in 2017, is the Bearkats' ace in the circle. The junior is responsible for four of the Kats' six victories this season. She owns a 2.09 earned run average and is holding opponents to a .204 batting average.
Sam Houston and Incarnate Word opened each other's Southland schedules last season. The Bearkats swept the 2017 series, winning 3-0, 10-0 and 4-2 in San Antonio.
The series with Incarnate Word opens a two-week home stand for the Bearkats. Sam Houston will play host to Marist in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at 3 p.m. The Kats continue Southland Conference action against McNeese Friday and Saturday March 16 and 17.
