Fabienne Gettwart Earns Weekly Honor

Fabienne Gettwart has been named Southland Conference women's tennis “Player of the Week” after leading Sam Houston to a pair of 6-1 league victories over New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana Saturday and Sunday, April 14 and 15.
The league office announced Gettwart as the weekly award winner Tuesday. Southland Conference Players of the Week are presented by UniversityCom.com. The senior from Dreiech, Hessen, Germay earned four wins between singles and doubles play in the Bearkats' two final home matches of the 2018 season. The victories upped the squad's season record to 12-5 and moved the Kats into fourth place in the Southland race with a 7-3 mark. The 12 wins this season tie the program record for victories in one season.
Sam Houston already has clinched their second consecutive trip to the Southland Conference Tournament under the direction of second-year head coach Rob Hubbard. Sam Houston needs a victory in its final regular season contest Saturday at Nicholls to nail down a top four seed in the tournament.
The Bearkats rolled up a perfect 9-0 record at the McAdams Center this spring. That mark ranks as Sam Houston's first unbeaten home season in more than 30 years at the NCAA Division I level.
Her singles play this weekend upped Gettwart's career total to 57 victories, ranking eighth all time at SHSU. In Saturday's contest against New Orleans, Gettwart and teammate Khee Yen Wee won 6-3 at the No. 2 doubles slot before Gettwart won a three-setter against the Privateers' Trang Dao at the top flight, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. The doubles pair earned a 6-1 win in Sunday's match against Southeastern Louisiana, and Gettwart upped her singles record to 13-4 on the year with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat over Madina Vorotnikova.
Gettwart becomes the second Bearkat to earn the weekly award of this season. Sophomore Lusine Chobanyan received the honor in week two on Jan. 30. Chobanyan's honor marked Sam Houston's first women's tennis Player of the Week since Irina Sotnikova was voted the award two times during her senior season in 2009.
Bearkat players have earned Southland Player of the Week honorable mention 10 times during the 2018 season after receiving votes in balloting. Kat honorable mention selections have included Gettwart (January 23, March 27 and April 3), Sahaja Yamalapalli (February 6, March 6 and March 13), Carrie Casey (February 13 and 20) and Khee Yen Wee (April 10).
