Weekend Road Schedule Altered

The Sam Houston women's tennis team's schedule for this weekend has been altered but the Bearkats still have a major hurdle to face in Louisiana. Saturday's tilt with the Nicholls Colonels in Thibodaux, La., has been postponed due to rain. But the SHSU women still will take on league-leading McNeese in Lake Charles on Sunday.
McNeese and Northwestern State stand atop the Southland Conference standings both with 7-1 league records. A&M-Corpus Christi is a nalf-game back with a 6-1 record. One match back is Sam Houston with its 5-2 Southland mark. Sam Houston stands 10-4 overall for the season, the first time for the program to post double digit wins overall since 2012.
"Sunday is a big match for us, no doubt," head coach Rob Hubbard said. "We've been playing well late, winning five of our last six matches. But we're going to have to take it up another notch against McNeese."
The Cowgirls stand 12-3 for the season. Their Southland Conference victories have come over A&M-Corpus Christi, New Orleans, Southeastern Louisiana, Stephen F. Austin, Abilene Christian, Incarnate Word and Central Arkansas.
Singles has been the Bearkats' strength in dual match play. Sam Houston stands 56-27 in singles matches this spring. Lusine Chobanyan leads the team with a 12-1 record playing at number five and six. Fabienne Gettwart, Sahaja Yamalapalli and Carrie Casey all hold 11-3 marks playing at the number one, two and four positions. The Kats turned in a strong doubles performance in their last victory, taking the doubles point in a 6-1 win over the Cardinals.
