TULSA, Okla. – Lexi Bullard sunk her first goal of the season, but four goals for the Golden Hurricanes were too much for the Bearkats to handle in the Sam Houston State soccer team's (1-3-1) 4-1 loss at Tulsa, Sunday afternoon.
SHSU wasted no time getting to work as Meredith Carlson registered the first shot of the match late in the second minute. Micaela Birt and Courtney Pawlik each recorded a shot of their own, but they both fell into the hands of Tulsa goalkeeper Mica MacKay.
Tulsa came charging back two minutes later and drove the ball down the pitch towards the SHSU goal. As senior goalkeeper Christina Hendershot came out to contest the shot, Mia Darden fired a shot that was saved by a
After the Golden Hurricanes committed a foul at the 9-minute mark, senior Bailey Strong attempted to score on a free kick from 30-yards out but her shot sailed high over the goal.
Whitney Woodward showed fantastic defense in the 34th minute and slid in to block a Tulsa shot in the box. Woodward took the last shot of the half, but her shot went high and the Kats went into halftime trailing 1-0.
Five minutes into the second half, Tulsa lined up for a free kick after an SHSU foul. Picking up her third save of the day, Hendershot made a remarkable diving stop to keep it a 1-0 match. Hendershot picked up another save one minute later after TU's Emily Brandenburg attempted a header in the box.
Despite another diving attempt, Tulsa took a 2-0 lead in the 54th minute after Anna Williams sunk a shot from 25-yards out into the upper right corner. Two minutes later, Darden picked up her second goal off a rebounded shot to put the Golden Hurricanes up, 3-0.
Switching things up defensively, SHSU turned to freshman Abby DeLozier in the 60th minute to defend the
SHSU broke its scoreless streak in the 76th minute when sophomore Sammi Mayock passed the ball to Bullard into the box. Dribbling around her defender, Bullard scored her first goal of the season into the top left side of the net to cut Tulsa's lead, 4-1.
Pawlik took one final shot in the last minute, but her attempt flew high and the Bearkats fell 4-1 to the Golden Hurricanes. Hendershot (who fell to 1-3-1 on the season), DeLozier and the
