After a slow start to the day, the Sam Houston bowlers finished strong on the first day of the Kutztown Invitational.
The No. 5 ranked Kats struggled out of the gate, sitting in 19th place after three games. But two big games to finish out the day moved them to 9th heading into Saturday's action.
“Despite a slow start your we managed to notch three Top 25 wins to push us back in to the top 10 of 30 teams,” said head coach Brad Hagen. “We simply had execution issues in the first set and when the lanes are playing like they are you can't fight your lines and the lanes or you're immediately playing from behind.”
In the opening three games, the Kats dropped matches to LIU Brooklyn and Maryland Eastern Shore, getting a win against the 25th ranked hosts. In the final two games, the Kats poured it on, topping 1,000 pins in each game, noting wins against No. 9 St. Francis (PA) and No. 23 Duquesne University.
The Kats will start the day on Saturday just 165 pins out of fourth place and a spot in the championship bracket on Sunday.
“We must stay committed, come out swinging tomorrow and execute,” Hagen said. “No excuses period.”
