HUNTSVILLE – After a strong showing in its opening weekend of the season, the Sam Houston State Bearkats are set to kick off the home portion of the 2019 slate on Friday when it opens a three-game series with the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns at Don Sanders Stadium.
The first game of the series is scheduled to be aired on ESPN+ and the ESPN app. Live stats will also be available, while updates can be found by following @BearkatsBSB on Twitter.
Coach Matt Deggs' crew opened up 2019 on the road last weekend with a pair of wins at the RyCass Classic in DeLand, Fla., picking up wins over both Manhattan and Stetson before falling to Virginia Tech in the weekend finale.
Hunter Hearn kicked off his senior season in style, homering in each of his first two at-bats of the season and adding another against the Hokies to cap a big weekend. Reese Johnson reached base safely in eight of his 11 plate appearances, while true freshman Colton Cowser hit a grand slam and doubled against Manhattan.
Haydesn Wesneski is scheduled to get the start in the series opener against the Cajuns following a dominant performance against Stetson where he punched out 11 hitters in 7.1 innings. In all, the Bearkat pitching staff struck out 31 hitters in 27.0 innings of work on the weekend while holding hitters to just a .222 average.
SCOUTING LOUISIANA
The Cajuns have had a tough-luck start to their 2019 season, dropping three of four close games before coming to Huntsville. They hosted No. 23 Texas in Lafayette on opening weekend, falling by a combined three runs in the first two games before rebounding to take the finale. They then fell in walk-off fashion at Louisiana Tech on Wednesday night in Ruston.
