BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The final day of the Southland Indoor Track and Field Championships wrapped up on Monday with the Sam Houston State men's team taking home a title for the fourth straight year.
The Bearkats were the only school to hit triple digits in the men's championship. It was an excellent way to cap off a stellar season for the men with athletes setting new career bests and some even setting tournament records.
The three athletes that stood out among the rest were freshman Jo'vaughn Martin, senior Chris Jefferson and junior Fabian McCall. Martin (20.94) and Jefferson (20.97) finished the 200-meter in first and second place respectively. Both times were meet records. For Martin, his mark bested the previous record held by teammate Jefferson (21.07). Jefferson's mark would move him into second in meet history.
Both sprinters would also place second and third in the 60-meter dash.
McCall, who has been a standout performer for the program set a meet record as well. He walked away as the champion in the 60-meter hurdles as he topped out with a time of 7.75. His mark passed the previous tournament high of 7.81 set by Carl Johnson of UTSA back in 2003.
Some more athletes that set new career or season highs: Lawrence Coleman (21.75) and Eric Callaway (21.76) in the 200-meter dash, Jordan Leon (8:19.10) in the 3000-meter dash, Saige Revell (50' 5.5”) and Joshua Hamilton (48' 1.25”) in the triple jump and Aaron Akens who set career best marks in the shot put (53' 0.25”) and weight throw (63' 4.75”).
The women's team finished in a tie for seventh with Central Arkansas, as Stephen F. Austin ran away with the title.
The team's 4x400 Relay team placed fourth with a time of 3:48.65. Some of the top athletes for the women's this season had solid performances during the tournament. Tristyn Allen placed in the top five in both the long jump and triple jump and Baylee Lara placed fifth in the pentathlon.
With the indoor season wrapping up the athletes that qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships will be back at the Birmingham CrossPlex March 8-9.
