FRISCO - Sam Houston State freshman Colton Cowser was named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week on Monday afternoon, per a release from league officials.
It is the first such honor of Cowser's career and the third time this season a Bearkat hitter has claimed the honor. It is the second straight week a Bearkat freshman has taken the weekly award, following teammate Diego Davila who took it one week ago.
Cowser is quickly establishing himself as not only one of the top freshmen in the Southland Conference, but as one of the top overall players, and demonstrated why with a strong week for the Bearkats.
The Cy Ranch HS product reached base safely in 13 of 18 plate appearances over four games last week, including three multi-hit games. He hit safely in 9 of 14 official at-bats (.643 average), and reached base multiple times in each game.
He was one of the lone bright spots with a 2-for-3 night in a midweek loss at Louisiana Tech on Tuesday, then delivered a big game on Friday in a 10-4 win over UIW in the series opener. That night he reached base in all five plate appearances, walking twice and scoring four times as the Kats won going away. He was 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in the middle game, then delivered another big game in the finale.
His Sunday saw him go 3-for-5 with three RBI hits, driving in four total runs while also adding a homer and a double to his totals this year. For the season the true freshman is hitting .373 with a .597 slugging percentage and .443 on-base percentage, with six doubles, three homers and 17 RBI in 17 games.
Cowser and the rest of the Bearkats have another tough week ahead of them as they play host to Baylor on Tuesday at The Don before hitting the road for three games at New Orleans beginning on Friday on the Lakefront.
