
Women's golf shares lead at SLC Championship

MAGNOLIA – The Sam Houston State women hold a share of the lead after the first day of play at the Southland Conference Championships at High Meadow Ranch.
The Kats shot an opening round 295 and share the lead with Houston Baptist at 7-over par. Central Arkansas is two shots back and Lamar is seven shots behind the leaders.
“I am very proud of the team and our commitment to their game plan today,” said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. “This was a solid start to the event and we just need to play a little cleaner tomorrow.”
Hanna Alberto led the way for the Kats with a 1-under round of 71. She is one shot back of the lead. Kenlie Barrett is in third after an even par round of 72.
Alberto made the turn at 3-under and was in the lead. After a double bogey on No. 12, she followed with two birdies on Nos. 13 and 14. Bogeys on Nos. 15 and 17 closed out her 1-under day.
Barrett had a steady round of golf, never dropping below even par. She had four birdies and four bogeys on her day.
“The girls did a good job of keeping the rounds together to stay in contention,” Kieschnick said. “We have to go out tomorrow and execute the same game plan, and trust the process
commitment to our game plan.”
Jenna Phillips, Tori Gatling and Leah Alberto all shot opening rounds of 76 and are tied for 15th.
