MAGNOLIA – The Sam Houston women made a charge on the back 9 and moved into first heading into the final round of the Southland Conference Championship.
After 8 holes, the Kats were in a 12-shot hole to Houston Baptist, before starting their comeback. They were 7-under on the final 10 holes and finished with a 295 for the second straight day.
“Today was one of the most mentally tough rounds I've seen from our women's team this year,” said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. “We got off to a really slow start and got behind early. The girls stayed focused on each shot and committed to the game plan and we finished strong.”
Kenlie Barrett has been the model of consistency this week, shooting a 72 for the second straight day. She birdied two of her final four holes, and will take a 1-shot lead into the final round.
“She's managed the golf course really well and staying focused one shot at a time,” Kieschnick said. “She's got great ball control and positioning herself well on the golf course.”
One shot back of Barrett is Hanna Alberto who shot a 74 on Tuesday. She made the turn at 4-over par after a triple bogey on No. 3. But birdies on Nos. 10 and 12 and 6 pars to close out the round put her in a tie for second place.
Tori Gatling made a big move on Tuesday after shooting 73 to climb seven spots on the leaderboard and is currently in a tie for 8th. Jenna Phillips is 17th after shooting back-to-back rounds of 76 and Leah Alberto is 24th following a 78 on Tuesday.
The final round from High Meadow Ranch in Magnolia will get started at 10:15 Wednesday morning for the Kats.
