McKINNEY – With 18 holes in the books, the men's golf team finds itself four shots off the pace at the Southland Conference Championships.
The Kats shot a 305 on Monday at the par-72 Stonebridge Ranch Country Club. Heading to the final three holes, the Kats were 10 shots back of Lamar, but William Holcomb, Noah Steele and Luis Carrera played the last three holes at a combined 2-under par to jump to spots in the standings and moved into a tie for second with Southeastern Louisiana.
“I was proud of the guys and how hard they fought in tough conditions today,” said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. “We made mistakes that we have to clean up but it is a positive that we are only four shots off the lead.”
Steele played an up and down even par round, carding six birdies, two bogies and two double bogies. He played the back nine at 1-under and currently sits in a tie for second, one shot back of the individual lead.
Holcomb and Levi Valadez are each 4-over and stand in 12thplace overall. Carrera's only blemish on the back nine was a triple bogey on the 15thand he's currently 9-over and in a tie for 33rdplace. Jack Randle is one shot back of Carrera in 37thplace.
Because of bad weather in the forecast for Wednesday, Southland Conference officials have decided to play 36 holes on Tuesday.
“We've been in this position all semester and we need to go get locked in on our lines and routine and play as mature as we can,” Kieschnick said. “These guys have done this all year very well and we look forward to competing tomorrow for a championship.”
