AUGUSTA, Ga. – Hanna Alberto ended an up and down day at the Augusta National Women's Amateur with a couple of birdies to finish the first round on a high note.
Playing at the Champions Retreat course in Augusta, Alberto birdied holes 17 and 18 to finish out her day with a 5-over, 77. She currently sits in 47th place in a field of the top 72 amateur golfers in the world.
"It was great. It definitely helped me going into tomorrow,” Alberto said about her two birdies to finish. “It wasn't the best (round), but I was able to get some shots back coming in. The course is playing kind of tough.”
Alberto opened her day with a bogey, but got back to even par with a birdie on No. 4. A bogey on No. 5 put her back to 1-over. She then hit a tough stretch starting on No. 8, with a bogey on her next five holes. A birdie on No. 14 and double bogey on 15 put her at 5-over before her two birdies to finish.
She will start Round 2 on the back nine, teeing of at No. 10 at 8:36 a.m. looking to make a move up the leaderboard. The top 30 golfers will make the cut and play a final round on Saturday at Augusta National.
Alberto said she feels she can make the adjustments necessary to get into the top 30. There are currently three golfers tied at 2-over in 30th place. Alberto sits three shots back of the cut line.
“I have a few mental notes like checking my tempo and making sure I have the right pace on the greens,” she said. “It's been so crazy. I think it's an amazing event and I'm competing against the best amateurs in the world. I'm making memories I won't forget.”
Following Thursday's round, the entire field will play a round of golf at Augusta National, the site of the Masters, on Friday.
