FRISCO - After claiming back-to-back conference tournament championships, the Sam Houston State men's golf team received several postseason honors, Southland officials announced Tuesday afternoon.
Luis Carrera was selected as the Freshman of the Year, and Brandt Kieschnick was tabbed Coach of the Year for guiding the Bearkats to four tournament titles and a second-place finish in six events this spring.
Noah Steele and William Holcomb were named to the All-SLC first team, Carrera was also a second-team selection and Jack Randle was honorable mention.
Aside from the SLC tournament championship, Sam Houston State won the Bayou City Collegiate in Pearland, the Huntsville Toyota Bearkat Invitational in Montgomery and The All American in Houston.
“This is what happens when you set your mind to being the best player you can, working toward that every day,” Kieschnick said. “This team is mature as can be. They work hard, and they are humble. Most importantly, they try to be excellent in everything they do, and these awards are a testimony of their hard work and commitment to the team.”
Steele landed on the All-SLC first team for the second time in his career following his individual championship at the Southland Conference Tournament in McKinney on April 24. The junior from Kingston, Ontario also had a top-five finish at the Bearkat Invitational, tied for 12th at The All American, tied for 26th at the Louisiana Classics and tied for 19th at the Border Olympics.
Holcomb was also named to the first team for the second consecutive year. The junior from Crockett had three top-five finishes this spring. He tied for second at The All American, third at the Bearkat Invitational and fifth at the Border Olympics, as well as a seventh-place tie at the Bayou City Collegiate Invitational and two top-20 finishes the Southland Conference Tournament and the Louisiana Classics.
This spring, Carrera, who is from Mexico City, tied for 22nd at The All American, tied for eighth at the Bearkat Invitational, tied for seventh at Bayou City Collegiate Classic and tied for 13th at the Southland tournament.
Randle, a freshman from The Woodlands, placed in a tie for fourth at The All American and a tie for 18th at the Southland Conference Tournament to highlight his spring season.
The Bearkats will find out Wednesday which NCAA Regional site they will be going to May 13-15. The selection show will air live on the GOLF Channel's Golf Central and be streamed live on the Golf Channel website at 8 p.m.
“We have won our last three events, and I think the guys know these awards represent how they prepare to get ready for tournaments,” Kieschnick said. “They are confident that if they keep doing the same things to prepare, we have a chance to win a regional.”
