HUNTSVILLE - The Sam Houston State women's soccer team will look to build off its perfect start in Southland Conference play when Houston Baptist and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi come to Pritchett Field this weekend.
The Bearkats (3-5-0, 1-0-0 in SLC) will battle the Huskies (1-7-0, 0-1-0) Friday at 6:30 p.m. Houston Baptist is coming off a 4-1 loss in its conference opener last week to Abilene Christian.
The Islanders (3-5-0, 0-1-0) also lost their first conference match last week, falling 1-0 on the road at Incarnate Word. A&M-Corpus Christi will come to Huntsville Sunday for a 1 p.m. start.
Sam Houston State opened league play last week with a thrilling 3-2 home victory over defending conference champion Central Arkansas in overtime. Freshman Kalynn Bickford scored a golden goal on a penalty after junior Briana Woodall drew a foul in the box.
The Bearkats trailed 2-0 for most of the match, but senior Sammi Mayock came off the bench to spark SHSU's offensive attack.
Woodall cleaned up a loose ball on a goalkeeper block off a shot by Bickford and pushed the ball into the net to cut the lead to 2-1 in the 73rd minute. Less than a minute later, freshman Kenzie Arrington sent the ball into the UCA box, and Mayock played it past the goalkeeper to knot the match at 2.
