Bowlers open season Friday at Louisiana Tech

HUNTSVILLE - On March 12, 2020, the Southland Conference basketball tournament was postponed as COVID-19 cases in the country began to spread. Two days later all competition was halted, including the Southland Bowling League Championship set to be held six days later in Conroe.

The road to getting back to competing has been a long one, but Friday, the Sam Houston State bowling team will be the first to return to action when they get things started at the La Tech Invitational in Ruston, La.

"I think this is something everyone has looked forward to," said head coach Brad Hagen. "There was so much unknown about this season, when it was going to start if at all, so I think we are ready to just get back out again."

This weekend's event will be one of just two this fall for the Bearkats. Not only are they competing in a reduced number of events, but there will also be a greatly reduced number of teams competing in the tournaments. This weekend, the Kats will be one of seven teams taking part in the event at Campus Lanes.

Joining in the No. 5 ranked Kats will be No. 19 Tulane, No. 7 SFA, No. 21 UAB, No. 2 Vanderbilt, Prairie View A&M and the hosts, No. 9 Louisiana Tech.

In addition to the smaller tournament size, there will also be no spectators at any of the first two events of the year.

"I think the main thing for us will be to remain focused on what we need to do," Hagen said. "It is going to be a different atmosphere than we are used to, but I'm not worried about it affecting our approach."
