Kats have strong showing at indoor meet

HOUSTON — The Sam Houston State men's and women's track and field teams brought home numerous top-10 finishes at the Howie Ryan Invitational hosted by Houston at the Yeoman Fieldhouse Friday.

The women's 4x400-meter relay team of freshman Jemia Goree, freshman Teona Spivey, freshman Kimberly Carr and sophomore Payton Wells captured first with a time of 3:50.58, which was almost three seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

Junior Clayton Fritsch took the gold in the men's pole vault with a height of 5.45 meters, and junior Zachary Johnson finished first in the long jump with a distance of 7.32 meters and placed third in the triple jump at 15.26 meters.

Also, for the men, junior Caleb Jolivette took second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.80, and Eric Callaway was seventh at 6.94.

Callaway placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.59, and freshman Cameron Brown was ninth at 22.05.

Junior Joshua Smith grabbed the Bearkats another second-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.40. Senior Ethan Woods was eighth at 49.41.

Junior Joe Austin III captured sixth in the mile with a time of 4:28.29, while junior Andrew Bosquez placed fourth and sophomore Sergio Armendariz eighth in the 3,000-meter run with times of 8:27.51 and 8:37.71, respectively.

In the men's field events, sophomore Steven Gruss was eighth in the high jump with a height of 1.95 meters, and junior Joshua Hamilton took eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 14.63 meters.

Freshman Cobe Graham placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 14.90 meters just ahead of sophomore Brian Orlando who was seventh at 14.72.

On the women's side, SHSU also had the team of sophomore Haviland Harris, junior Jasmin Mitchell, junior Selena Wright and junior Sylvia Freeman take fourth in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:56.24.

The distance medley squad of junior Rebeca Gonzalez, freshman Makaylah Halstead, sophomore Sandy Clarkin and Cryslan Tucker placed fifth with a time of 12:24.33.

Goree placed fourth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.73. Wright was fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.80, and junior Alie Angelo was sixth at 9.14.

The women had three top-10 finishes in the 200-meter dash with Wells taking fifth with a time of 27.78 ahead Freeman and Goree who tied for eighth at 25.14.

Spivey placed ninth in the 400 with a time of 57.53.

In the field events, freshman Shaynea Redmond placed fifth in the long jump with a distance of 5.77 meters, and junior Rachel Smith was eighth in the weight throw with a mark of 15.82 meters.
