FRISCO — Sam Houston State senior Megan McDonald has been selected as the 2020 Southland Conference softball Student-Athlete of the Year, the league office announced Wednesday in conjunction with the release of the all-academic teams.
Â
McDonald, who was also named to the all-academic first team, just finished her second semester of graduate school with a major in public administration after graduating last year with a degree in kinesiology and a 3.80 grade point average.
Â
Seniors Tiffany Thompson and Bailey White were selected to the Academic All-Southland Conference second-team.
Â
A 2020 preseason first-team All-SLC selection, McDonald was hitting .398 before the season was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. She led the Bearkats in average, RBI (15), hits (35) and slugging percentage (.455) while hitting at the top of the lineup this past season.
Â
McDonald was named the SLC Hitter of the Week after hitting .520 with a .640 slugging percentage and .538 on-base percentage in six games versus Texas A&M, North Dakota State and Louisiana Tech earlier in the season.
Â
She was a first-team All-SLC outfielder and all-academic honoree in 2019.
Â
Thompson, who graduated in May with a degree in public health and 3.82 GPA, was a preseason All-Southland Conference first-team selection this past season after earning first-team all-conference and all-academic honors during her stellar junior campaign in 2019. She had a .292 career batting average with 169 hits, 23 home runs, 31 doubles, six triples and 94 RBI.
Â
White, who was fourth on the team with three doubles and one home run before suffering a season ending injury, has been a staple in the Sam Houston State softball team's lineup the past three seasons and has excelled in the classroom. She is set to graduate in August with her master's degree in business administration after earning her bachelor's in general business with a 3.97 GPA.
