WICHITA, Kan. – After an exhibition win at home to start the season, the Bearkats stayed sharp in their opening event of the season, taking the title at the Mid States Championship hosted by Wichita State.
Competing in the USBC Tier 1 event, the Bearkats qualified for the 8-team bracket play as the No. 1 seed, after leading the tournament most of day 1. Once, they got into the single elimination best-of-five matches, the Kats rolled.
In all three matches on Sunday, the Kats were pushed to five games, coming out on top each time to win the USBC Tier 1 event.
"The team just showed so much composure coming back and bowling the way they did on Sunday," said head coach Brad Hagen. "We didn't finish Day 1 the way we wanted, but they were able to refocus and make the big shots win needed."
In the championship match against Mount Mercy, the Bearkats won games 1 and 3 to take a 2-1 advantage in the match. The two teams then split the fourth game, before the Kats took game 5 and the championship.
In the semifinals, it took a come-from-behind effort for the Kats to get into the championship. They split the first two games with Newman before dropping the third. Facing elimination, the Bearkats battled back narrowly winning the fourth 214-211, before putting it away in the fifth, 229-188. Denise Blankenzee and Bea Hernandez each closed out with three strikes in the 10th frame to seal the victory.
After closing out the first day of action sitting in third place, the Bearkats had a strong morning to earn the No. 1 seed. They closed a 100 pin deficit and jumped Mount Mercy and Wichita State to take the top spot by 87 pins. That allowed them to not have to face either of the other top three teams until the finals.
The next USBC event for the Bearkats will be the Sectional Tournament on March 12 and 13. They will kick off the regular season on Oct. 22 for the Tulane Invitational.
