Kats close fall season with strong showing

HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston tennis team wrapped up the fall season with an impressive performance at the Bearkat Invitational held at the McAdams Tennis Center Saturday and Sunday.

The Bearkats picked up seven singles wins and two doubles victories in the round-robin format which also featured players from Illinois State, Northwestern State and UTSA.

Freshman Megan Basson had a strong showing in flight one singles. She defeated Tijana Zlatanovic of ISU 6-1, 6-4 and rallied to take down Rozi Dohnalova of Northwestern State 3-6, 6-1, 10-8.

Junior Isidora Zivkovic earned a come-from-behind victory over Alexandra Abyasova of Illinois State 5-7, 6-4, 11-9 in flight two. She dropped her second-round match to Illinois State's Tijasa Klevisar 6-3, 7-6 and lost to Jasmin Starr of UTSA 6-1, 6-2 in the final match.

Graduate student Lusine Chobanyan fell in a hard-fought match to Maria Potsi 2-6, 6-3, 10-3 in flight three. She lost her second-round match to Mariella Minetti 6-2, 6-3, then she took Alexandra Weir of UTSA to the limit before falling 6-3, 3-6, 10-3.

Sophomore Sahithi Vutukuru won her flight four match against Tara Damnjanovic of Illinois State 7-5, 6-1. She lost to Ayu Ishibashi of Northwestern State 6-4, 6-2 and to Keegan McCain of UTSA 6-3, 6-4.

After losing her close opening match in flight five to Elena Jankulovska of Illinois State 6-7, 7-5, 10-3, sophomore Sunskrithi Damera got hot to close out her matches. She cruised past Viktorie Wojcikova of Northwestern State 6-3, 6-0 then battled Eva Beyebach of UTSA for a 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 victory.

Senior Petra Kaszas dropped her first flight six match to Othilia Brodin of Illinois State 6-4, 6-0. She turned things around with a win in her second match, defeating Thitirat Kanaphuet of Northwestern State 6-3, 6-0. She finished singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Sophie Omoworare of UTSA.

In doubles play, Roos Gerritsen and Kaszas defeated Posti and Zlatanovic 7-6. They lost to Klevisar and Minetti 6-2.

Basson and Kaszas dropped their only doubles match together to Weir and Zlatarova 7-5.

Chobanyan and Zivkovic played in flight two doubles. They lost to McCain and Starr 7-5, Abreu and Damnjanovic 6-3 and fell to Dohnalova and Wojcikova 6-2.

Damera and Vutukuru rolled to a 6-3 victory over Beyebach and Omoworare in flight three doubles. They lost to Abyasova and Fitzgerald 6-4 and to Ishbashi and Kanaphuet 6-1.
