Kats struggle early in loss to Boston U

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Sam Houston fell behind early and could not crawl out of the hole in a 72-59 loss at UNF Arena to Boston University at the Jacksonville Classic on Monday.
The Bearkats (2-3) cooled off after shooting lights out in a win over Little Rock on Sunday. Sam Houston hit just six 3-pointers against the Terriers (4-2) after knocking down 13 in the win over the Trojans.
Boston, on the other hand, couldn't miss from long range. The Terriers went 12 for 20 from behind the arc.
Savion Flagg led the Bearkats with 15 points, and Tristan Ikpe scored 10. Jaden Ray added nine points.
Boston went up by 12 with under 16 minutes to go in the second half, but the Bearkats came roaring back. Flagg, Damon Nicholas Jr., Donte Powers and Ray all scored to spark an 8-0 run to cut the advantage to 41-37.
After the Kats cut the lead to 44-40, the Terriers scored eight unanswered to go back up double figures at 52-40 with under 10 minutes to go in the game. Sam Houston was unable to overcome the deficit the rest of the way.
The Bearkats got off to a cold start, shooting just 17 percent from the field to fall behind 21-8 with just under eight minutes to go in the first half.
But Sam Houston finally started making shots and closed the gap. The Kats went on a 12-4 run to pull within 25-20 thanks to baskets by Powers, Flagg, Demarkus Lampley and Kuba Karwowski.
The Terriers answered with a 5-0 to take a 30-20 lead into the break.
Sam Houston will head to Dallas to take on SMU on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
