HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston soccer team battled to the end in the cold and rain, but UIW scored a late goal to come away with a 3-2 victory at Pritchett Field Sunday afternoon.
The Bearkats (1-3-1 in SLC) twice rallied after falling behind. Junior Grace Stine scored both goals for Sam Houston, which will host Abilene Christian Tuesday in a makeup game.
The Cardinals (4-3-1, 3-2-1 SLC) struck first in the 16th minute when Sierra Wannamaker was able to get the ball just over the head of goalkeeper Tatum Krueger.
It did not take long for the Bearkats to answer. Freshman Landri Townsend assisted Stine with the equalizer just over a minute later.
UIW took as 2-1 lead into the half after Hannah Walsh was able to float a free kick from about 35 yards out untouched into the net in the 26th minute.
Stine once again tied the match in the second half. She was able to get the ball past goalkeeper Margaret Kofron off the assist from junior Jade Dewbre in the 56th minute.
The game winner came when Jade Piper broke free and had a direct path to the goal. Krueger came out and challenged the shot, but Piper slide into Krueger and was able to push the ball into the left corner of the net in the 72nd minute.
Krueger finished with four saves.
