HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston Bearkats took care of business in quick fashion on Friday night, kicking off a 4-game series with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with a 13-2 win in seven innings at Don Sanders Stadium.
Colton Cowser homered twice for the second straight game and had five RBI to lead an offensive breakout that saw eight players pick up an RBI and all nine hitters register at least one base hit.
Tyler Davis was the benefactor on the mound scattering seven hits over 7.0 innings for the complete-game win, moving his record to 3-1 on the season.
In all, five Bearkats finished with multi-hit games, including
Bryce Holmes who had a pair of doubles and two runs scored.
Trent Touchet also had three hits and an RBI, with
Gavin Johnson picking up two RBI on a pair of hits.
The Islanders were able to stake themselves to an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning, but Sam Houston surged ahead just three batters into the bottom of the first when Cowser connected on a 3-run homer off of AMCC starter Leo Perez. Holmes and Touchet followed with hits, with
Clayton Chadwick picking up an RBI on a grounder to give the Kats a 4-1 lead after an inning.
TAMUCC was able to get a run back in the top of the second, but from there it would be all Sam Houston. RBI hits from Holmes and Touchet in the bottom half of the inning pushed the lead back to 6-2 and two innings later Cowser struck again, this time with a 2-run homer to plate
Jack Rogers and up the advantage to 8-2.
That counted for the first two scores of a 5-run inning as the Kats tacked on three more on RBI form Johnson,
Mason Schulz and Rogers for a commanding 11-2 inning.
While Davis was cruising on the mound, Sam Houston push the lead into double digits on an RBI single by Johnson in the fifth and got one more in the sixth when
Easton Loyd blasted an RBI triple off the right-center field fence to score
Anthony MacKenzie from second.
The Kats will now play a pair of games against the Islanders beginning with a scheduled 7-inning affair in Game 1 at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. The game can be heard on KSAM 101.7 FM.
