HUNTSVILLE -- On the final day of the Huntsville Toyota Bearkat Invitational, the Sam Houston women's golf team left little in doubt. Entering the day with a nine-shot lead over HBU, the Kats, now ranked No. 48 in the country by GolfStat, ran away from the field, shooting 1-under as a team and winning the event by 42 strokes.
Along with the dominating team performance,
Anna Takahashi took the individual medalist honors. She carded a par on the final hole of the day to edge fellow Bearkats
Jennifer Herbst and
Leah Alberto who were a shot back in second place.
Zulaikah Nasser took fourth place, giving the Bearkats the top four individual finishers.
Takahashi, a freshman from Grapevine, entered the day with a one-stoke lead. She opened her day with a bogey and after 12 holes, was 3-over for the day. But birdies on Nos. 13 and 15 along with three pars to close, sealed the victory, the first of her collegiate career.
Viera Permata Rosada finished in a tie for 7
th, placing all five Bearkats in the top seven. Playing as individuals,
Madison Freeman finished 14
th and
Kenlie Barrett 19
th in the field of 67 golfers.
The low round of the tournament was shot by Alberto, who fired a 68 on Tuesday, to move up seven places from where she started the day. Her round included 6 birdies, including five on the front nine.
The 283 the Bearkats shot as a team on Tuesday breaks the program record for the low round in a tournament by two strokes, beating the mark set earlier this year at the HBU Husky Invitational. They also set the program mark for 54 holes by two strokes as well.
