Game Recap: Baseball |

Bearkats take two from Cowboys

HUNTSVILLE - After having their weekend series schedule adjusted for the second weekend in a row due to likely weather issues, the Sam Houston baseball team took both games in the doubleheader on Saturday with McNeese at Don Sanders Stadium.

The Bearkats (17-16, 13-9) put up six runs through the first six innings of game 1 which proved to be enough to grab the win in the series opener, 6-2. Game two was a closer affair with McNeese (18-16, 12-9) plating three runs in the eighth inning to tie the game at four, the game would ultimately go 14 innings and the Bearkats would win it on a Mason Schulz walk off single.

The two teams combined for thirty hits in the second game, with seventeen of them coming from the Bearkats. They will play another doubleheader at Don Sanders Stadium on Sunday with first pitch coming at noon. The first game will be an abbreviated seven inning game, followed by a nine-inning game for the last of the series.

Game 1
Sam Houston 6, McNeese 2

Tyler Davis got the start in game one and went 7.0 innings, allowing only six hits and two earned runs while striking out eight Cowboys. He moved to 5-2 on the year.

The Bearkats mixed in enough runs throughout to let Davis pitch with the lead during his whole outing. Steven Beard came in and pitched 2.0 clean innings allowing no hits and no runs to finish the game off.

Eight different Bearkats finished with a hit in the game, with the timeliest coming in the form of a Jack Rogers 2-run double that upped the lead to 3-0. The Kats added another in the fifth and two more in the sixth before the Cowboys got on the board for the only time in the game on a 2-out double by Nate Fisbeck in the top of the seventh.

Game 2
Sam Houston 6, McNeese 5 (14 innings)

Dominic Robinson pitched 6.0 innings of one run baseball, Cole Wesneski threw 3.0 scoreless innings in extras, and Mason Schulz walked it off in the bottom of the fourteenth inning with an RBI single to secure the Bearkats second win on the day over McNeese.

The Bearkats led 4-1 through seven innings off of RBI hits from Blake Faecher in the first inning, Corbin Vines and Wes Folse in the fourth, and Trent Touchet in the seventh; however, McNeese knocked home three runs in the eighth inning off of reliever Lance Lusk to tie it up at four.

Lusk would go on to pitch the ninth and tenth innings and give up no runs, but in the eleventh inning McNeese's Clayton Rasbeary sent a solo home run over the right center wall to give the Cowboys the 5-4 lead. In the bottom half of the eleventh the Bearkats would tie it back up at five off of a Colton Cowser RBI single.

Wesneski would come in for Lusk in the twelfth and throw three scoreless innings. Schulz would come up to bat in the bottom of the fourteenth with one out and the bases loaded, and he produced with an RBI single to walk it off and give the Bearkats the 6-5 win in the second game of the day.
