Bearkat lead after Round 1 at SLC Championships

EL DORADO, Ark. -- With round 1 in the books, the Sam Houston women's golf team leads after the first day of play at the Southland Conference Championship at Mystic Creek.

The Bearkats are 15-over par for the tournament and hold a three shot lead over Central Arkansas.

Jennifer Herbst holds the individual lead and was the only player under par after shooting an opening round 71. She made the turn at 3-over par, but got things turned around on No. 10. She birdied her first two holes on the back 9 and played four under down the stretch, including a birdie on No. 18 to finish the day under par.

Two other Bearkats are in the top 10m with Hanna Alberto and Zulaikah Nasser both tied for 8^th after shooting opening round scores of 77. Alberto had an up and down day, starting with a pair of double bogeys on Nos. 2 and 3. She fired three birdies on her round, but also had four bogeys on the back 9.

Nasser opened her day with a birdie and after 8 straight pars, made the turn at 1-under. She played the back 9 at 6-over with a pair of double bogeys.

Leah Alberto is tied for 17^th at 7-over par and Viera Permata Rosada is tied for 20^th at 9-over.

The Kats will play 18 more holes on Tuesday and the final round will be held Wednesday.
