WACO — Baylor scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back to hand Sam Houston an 8-0 loss in five innings at Getterman Stadium Wednesday.
It was the second and final meeting between the Bearkats (13-24) and Bears (22-12) this season. Baylor topped Sam Houston 7-3 in Huntsville on March 23.
The first inning was highlighted by a two-run home run by Taylor Ellis following a sacrifice fly Aliyah Binford. Baylor added five runs in the third on another sacrifice fly by Zadie LaValley, a two-run single by Hannah Smith and a two-run double by Sydney Collazos.
Collazos hit could have been a home run had it not been for a great defensive play by senior
Megan McDonald who almost made the catch at the top of the wall, turning it into a double and possibly saving a run.
Senior
Brooke Malia ripped a one-out single in the second inning, freshman
Ellie Grill reached on an error in the third and a single in the fifth, freshman
Kylie Hobbs walked in the fourth and junior
Sheridan Fisher hit an infield single in the fifth but the Kats couldn't find a way to bring them home.
Sophomore
Regan Dunn took the loss in the circle to fall to 5-8 on the season. She surrendered eight runs on eight hits.
Sidney Mansell got the win to improve to 7-3.
Freshman
Christine Billmeier tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
The Bearkats will head to Natchitoches, La., to face Northwestern State in a three-game Southland Conference series this weekend. Due to inclement weather, the doubleheader was moved to Saturday at 5 p.m. and a single game will be played Sunday at 1 p.m.
