EL DORADO, Ark. – The Sam Houston women's golf team wrapped up a dominant week on the course with their second consecutive Southland Conference Championship. The Bearkats once again fired the low team round of the day with a 316 to win the event by 19 strokes over Central Arkansas.
In addition to the team title, the Kats also had the top two finishers in the individual standings with senior
Hanna Alberto and freshman
Jennifer Herbst sharing the medalist honors. For Alberto, it's her 12
th tournament title of her career and her first Southland Conference medalist honor.
Alberto started the day eight shots back of Herbst who was on top of the leader board at the end of Monday and Tuesday. She made the turn at 3-over and had cut the lead to five shots. Her only birdie of the day came on No. 14 and with four holes to play she was just one back. Four pars to finish put her at 8-over for the tournament.
After a bogey on No. 17 to drop into a tie for first, Herbst parred the 18
th to earn a share of the title.
Four of the five Bearkat golfers carded top 10 finishes, with
Zulaikah Nasser finishing 7
th at 19-over for the tournament.
Viera Permata Rosada was two shots back in 9
th.
Leah Alberto finished the tournament in 12
th.
Just to show how truly dominant the Bearkats were, they beat third place HBU by 46 strokes and no other team was within 68 shots of the Bearkats. They were 177 shots better than SFA who finished last in the 8-team field.
The tournament victory earns the Bearkats an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. The Kats will compete at one of four regional sites, which will be announced on the NCAA Women's Golf selection show, which will be televised Wednesday, April 28, on the GOLF Channel at a time that is to be determined.
