Kats surge into first at SLC Championship

McKINNEY – A lot can happen over the course of a three-day championship golf event. The Bearkat men, who trailed Lamar by 10 shots after day 1, wasted no time flipping the script on Tuesday, bettering the Cardinals by 18 shots to take an 8-stroke lead into Wednesday's final round.

The biggest difference for the Bearkats was their play on the back 9 at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club. On Monday, the Kats were 14-over as a team on the final nine holes. Tuesday they were 2-over,

William Holcomb and Paul Chaplet each shot rounds of 69 on Tuesday and they currently sit in second and third place, respectively. Holcomb is just one shot off the lead, while Chaplet is two strokes back.

Holcomb got his day off to a strong start, with birdies on Nos. 2 and 3 and made the turn at 1-over. He played a bogey-free back nine with birdies on Nos. 11 and 13.

Chaplet also got off to a good start, with three straight birdies on holes 5, 6, and 7. A birdie on No. 10 got him to 4-under on the day. After dropping stroke on Nos 14 and 15, Chaplet got one back with a birdie on No. 16 to finish the day 3-under as well.

The rounds of 69 for Holcomb and Chaplet were the only rounds in the 60s in the field.

Ting-Wei Hsieh made a move up the leader board on Tuesday as well with a 73. He improved his day 1 score by a shot and moved up two places to a tie for 5^th. He played his best golf on the back nine, with three birdies including back-to-back on 16 and 17. He is three-over for the tournament and is 6 shots off the top of the individual medalist race.

Luis Carrera sits in 13^th place at 7-over for the tournament after shooting a 76 on Tuesday. Jack Randle is in 14^th at 8-over following his 77.

The Kats will look to capture their third straight Southland Conference title on Wednesday.
