SFA sweeps Kats in softball DH

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston could not get the opportune hit with runners in scoring position to fall to Stephen F. Austin 3-0 and 1-0 in a Southland Conference doubleheader at Bearkat Softball Complex on Friday.

The Bearkats (15-28, 11-12 SLC) and Ladyjacks (31-1, 22-1 SLC) will conclude the three-game series with a single game Saturday at noon.

Game 1
Stephen F. Austin 3, Sam Houston 0

SFA scored a run in the second add two more in the sixth to hand Sam Houston a 3-0 setback in game one.

The Bearkats managed five hits off of Ladyjacks ace Kassidy Wilbur (27-3) but could not string anything together to put themselves in a scoring situation. Junior Sheridan Fisher, senior Megan McDonald, sophomore Kyndal Kutac and freshman Hannah Scheaffer all hit safely for SHSU.

Freshman Mika Vento (7-7) was steady in the circle despite getting the loss. She allowed a run on a wild pitch and gave up a two-run home run Lexi Benton.

Game 2
Stephen F. Austin 1, Sam Houston 0 (9 inn.)

SFA scored the game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning on a RBI single by Shaylon Govan to complete a doubleheader sweep of Sam Houston in game two.

Sophomore Regan Dunn pitched a gem, tossing eight innings with nine strikeouts. She did not get any run support to fall to 6-10 on the season.

The Bearkats left the bases loaded in the third when junior Sheridon Fisher walked, freshman Ellie Grill singled and sophomore Kyndal Kutac was hit by a pitch with two outs. Freshman Taylor Bachmeyer grounded out to short to end the inning.

Bachmeyer gave SHSU a golden opportunity to score in the sixth when she just missed a solo home run to left. She ripped an offering from Kassidy Wilbur off the top of the wall, about a foot shy of leaving the park, to lead off the frame.

Senior Brooke Malia moved Bachmeyer over with a sacrifice bunt, but two straight popups ended the threat.

Malia, freshman Emily Telg, and senior Brooklyn Devine also hit safely for the Bearkats.
