Bearkats to play in Barstool's LTP Classic
It has been a season of first for the Sam Houston women's golf team, so it only seems fitting they get the finish their year with another first.
The Bearkats have accepted an invitation to participate in the Let Them Play Classic, LTP for short, organized by Barstool Sports.
Last week the Bearkats were one of 18 teams set to play in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional. After three days of off and on rain and no play allowed on the course, NCAA and tournament officials canceled the event and advanced the top six teams according to seeding to the NCAA Finals.
That decision left the Bearkats, along with 11 other squads and individuals who had qualified foe Regionals, seeing their season come to an end without the opportunity to actually play. In steps Barstool Sports. Sam Bozoian, known on twitter as @RiggsBarstool, almost immediately made an announcement that they would like to organize an event in Arizona for the team left out to play one more tournament this season.
In what was a relatively quick process, the NCAA approved the postseason event, treating it similarly to basketball's postseason events that are not hosted by the NCAA but are approved. Barstool is covering most of the cost for the teams to travel, stay and play in Arizona.
"I can't thank Barstool enough for giving these girls an opportunity to go out to Arizona and have one more event this season," said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. "It was a gut-wrenching way for our season to end last week, and I'm happy the girls will get this opportunity."
The Kats will send three golfers to participate in the event, Leah Alberto, Viera Permata Rosada and Anna Takahashi. They will join golfers from 12 other schools who will play in the two-day event at Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler Arizona. Play will begin on Thursday with two rounds and will conclude with one more round on Friday.
Hanna Alberto, who won four tournaments this season for the Bearkats, earned a spot in the NCAA Championships and will play as an individual at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale Arizona this week.
