Coming off the most successful season in Sam Houston golf history, head coach Brandt Kieschnick has already started adding to next season's squad, with the addition of Chad Sewell, a transfer from UTSA.
Â
Sewell was a Conference USA first team selection and led the Roadrunners with a 72.67 stroke average this past season. He helped guide the Roadrunners to their first NCAA Regional appearance as a team, competing at the Kingston Springs Regional in Tennessee. He was the top finisher at the regional for UTSA, taking 39th place.
Â
"We are extremely excited Chad will be joining our program for his final college season," Kieschnick said. "He's a great player and one of the most consistent players in college.
We look forward to him helping us win championships."
Â
The senior from Conroe recorded four top-20 finishes including a top 10 that came when he fired a 1-over-par 214 (73-70-71) to tie for seventh place and lead UTSA to a runner-up team showing at the Trinity Forest Invitational. Sewell earned C-USA Golfer of the Week honors for that performance.
Â
He opened the 2021 campaign by grabbing a share of 15th with a 220 (75-71-74) at the Border Olympics before carding a 218 (77-70-71) for 17th at the Cabo Collegiate at TPC San Antonio to help the Roadrunners finish ahead of five ranked teams, including then-No. 1 Arizona. He was the top Roadrunner at the C-USA Championship, placing 12th with a 2-under 214 (68-74-72).
Â
In his career at UTSA he recorded eight top-20 finishes, including four top-10s. His best tournament was a pair of fourth place finishes at the Big Texan as a freshman and the Louisiana Classics as a sophomore.Â
Â
In 2019 he qualified for the match play round at the 119th U.S. Amateur, winning a playoff with a birdie on the first playoff hole.Â
Â
In high school, he was a three-time all-district player at Conroe High School. Golfweek had him rated at the No. 4-ranked player in the state of Texas and 36th-ranked player in the country. Sewell captured the district title as a junior after firing a 72-72—144 and was runner-up as a senior.
Â
He joins a Bearkat program that is coming off its best season at the Division I level, finishing 9th at the NCAA Championships, just missing out on match play. They advanced to the NCAA Championships by taking fourth place at the Stillwater Regional, earning the first trip to the finals in program history.Â
