The Sam Houston State tennis program has been named an All-Academic Team by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for the ninth consecutive year, the organization announced Monday.
Â
In order to be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale) and all varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year.
"For the ninth year in a row, our women's team has achieved this standard of merit demonstrating that we not only strive for excellence on the tennis court but also thrive on distinction in the classroom," head coach Rob Hubbard said. "To say I am proud of this team's accomplishment in academics that coincided with it's best year in school history on the tennis court would be an understatement."
Sunskrithi Damera, Karla De La Luz Montalvo, Petra Kaszas, Ryli Ruffin, Sahithi Vutukuru, Sahaja Yamalapalli and Isidora Zivkovic were also selected by ITA as Division I Women Scholar-Athletes. To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, players must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year.
"Each year they continue to shine as student-athletes, representing Sam Houston State and Sam Houston athletics at the highest level," Hubbard said "Pushing for perfection in order to enjoy excellence has always been the mission both in the classroom and on the court."Â
The Bearkats won the program's first Division I conference championship this past season. Sam Houston finished Southland Conference play with a 10-1 record and were 15-4 overall.
