Tennis signs South African standout

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston head tennis coach Rob Hubbard has announced the addition of incoming freshman Megan Basson to the roster for the 2021-22 season.

The Bearkats are coming off the best season in school history that brought the program its first NCAA Division conference championship. Sam Houston went 10-1 in Southland Conference play and finished the season with a 15-4 overall mark.

Basson at one time was the No. 1 ranked junior in South Africa and won the South African Under 14 and Under 16 national championships. She has been ranked as high as No. 162 in the ITF World Junior rankings.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to have Megan joining our program this coming fall," Hubbard said. "She brings with her experience and accomplishments of the highest level, not only on a national level but, on the world stage. We look forward to her helping us continue to raise the bar with our tennis program."

Basson has won four ITF Junior championships and has been ranked as high as No. 1,174 in the WTA World rankings and as high as No. 702 in the ITF World Women's rankings. Her highest UTR to date is 10.2.

"As a young sportswoman, being successful I got a lot of pressure to choose the right college where I could continue my career," Basson said. "Sam Houston, from the first conversation with Coach Hubbard, felt like the right place for me not only as a tennis player but as a student. It is an environment I can be successful in and enjoy my college career. I am so blessed to have this opportunity to attend this amazing university."
