HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston head coach Rob Hubbard has announced that former standout Lusine Chobanyan is returning to the Bearkat program for her final year of eligibility.
Â
The Yerevan, Armenia product sat out the 2021 spring season. She helped Sam Houston make it to the finals of the Southland Conference Tournament and a fourth-place finish during the 2019 campaign.
Â
"I am thrilled to have Lusine returning after a year away for her fourth and final year of eligibility," Hubbard said. "She obviously brings with her an outstanding record as a starter for Sam Houston as she is toward the top of our leaderboards with her career victories record. Lulu also brings a wealth of experience as a two-time all-conference player for Sam which she can use to help our freshmen and sophomores this upcoming season. As you can see by her outstanding academic record, Lulu will also be a great asset both on and off the court."Â
Â
Chobanyan is No. 6 all-time in career overall singles victories with 62 wins at Sam Houston. She is No. 3 in overall singles victories in a season (26), fourth in dual match victories in a season (17) and fourth in overall singles win percentage in a season at .862 (25-2).
Â
Chobanyan is a three-time ITA All-Academic Team member and Scholar-Athlete. She was the No. 2 ranked female and No. 1 ranked junior in Armenia as a former member of Armenian Fed Cup Team.
Â
"I am very thankful to Coach Hubbard and Sam Houston State University for this incredible opportunity to further pursue my athletic, academic and personal goals here at SHSU," Chobanyan said. "I had an unforgettable undergraduate experience here on and off the court and nothing makes me happier than the realization that my journey with my favorite coaches, teammates and faculty is still in progress. I feel truly blessed and can't wait to accomplish more with my team both on the court and in the classroom under the leadership of our experienced, knowledgeable, and caring coaches. Once a Bearkat, always a Bearkat."
