Men's golf receives votes in the top 25

HUNTSVILLE - It feels like last season just finished, but the Sam Houston men's golf team will get the 2021 campaign underway in a couple of weeks and when they do, the team will be just outside the top 25 rankings.

The Bearkats are in the "Others Receiving Votes" portion of the Bushnell/Golfweek Preseason Coaches Poll. The Bearkats received 25 points in the voting, tied with Baylor for 31^st most points received in the poll. Defending national champion Pepperdine earned 14 first-place votes and are the preseason No. 1.

"We've always said we are building something special with this program," said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. "I think if you look at the path this program has been on the last several years, the success we saw last year was a result of doing things day in and day out that lead to competing for a national championship! I know there were some people nationally noticing us for the first time, but this is what we have been working towards, to be in the conversation every year."

The Kats are coming off the most successful season in program history. They advanced to the first NCAA Division I national championship, finishing in a tie for ninth.

Kieschnick was named the National Coach of the Year and William Holcomb was named the first Division I All-American in school history.

After a shortened season, where the Kats played mostly a regional schedule, they will get back to their traditional challenging slate on Sept. 13 when they head to Manhattan, Kan., for the Wildcat Invitational.
