Kats play well at Islander Open

CORPUS CHRISTI — The Sam Houston tennis team opened the season at the Islander Open held at the Henry Tennis Center over the weekend.

Petra Kaszas advanced to the finals in flight G singles against Kateryna Rublevska of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, but they did not finish their match Sunday when the tournament was canceled due to inclement weather. She knocked off Valeria Montero of UTRGV 6-2, 7-6 in the opener and defeated Chloe Chawner of UT Tyler in the semifinals 7-6, 7-5.

Luisine Chobanyan placed third in flight B singles with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Marjorie Souza of UTRGV Sunday. She dropped Brooklyn Ross of UT Tyler 6-2, 6-1 in the first round then fell to Destinee Martins of Tyler Junior College 7-5, 6-1 to move to the third-place match.

Isidora Zivkovic topped Noemi Sante of Texas A&M-Kingsville 6-3, 6-2 in flight C singles. She lost to Lucie Devier of North Texas 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the third-place match where she fell to Alba Perez of Lamar 6-4, 6-3.

In flight A singles, freshman Megan Basson placed fifth with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Leony Deutschmann of UT Tyler. She lost her opening round match to Isabelle Bahr of UTRGV 6-2, 6-3 but bounced back to top Jasmin Starr of UTSA 3-6, 6-5, 10-6.

Sahithi Vutukuru also placed fifth in flight F singles. She fell 6-2, 6-4 to Jordan Ortega-Mendez of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi then beat Anna Platisa of UTRGV and Patricia Apisah of UT Tyler.

Sunskrithi Damera won her opening match of flight E singles against Emmeline Polevoi of Lamar 7-5, 2-0 (retired).

Emma Stauber fell to Keegan McCain of UTSA 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round of flight D singles.

Damera teamed with Rublevska to place third in flight D doubles. They beat Maria Ponomareva and Likhitha Kalava of UNT 6-4.

Basson and Zivkovic made it to the fifth-place match in flight B doubles. They lost to Aleksandra Zlatarova and Eva Beyebach of UTSA in the opener then topped Katarina Sasaroga and Sandra Putz of UTRGV 6-3. Their run ended with a 6-2 loss to Deutschmann and Ross.

Kaszas and Stauber won their opening match in flight C doubles 8-2 against Mia Milojevic and Yeva Kononovych of TJC.

Vutukuru and Chobanyan lost their two matches in flight A doubles. They fell to Mariya Shumeika and Camille Townsend of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 8-6 and Maya Donkor and Noemi Sante of Kingsville 6-3.
