Womens golf in third at season opening event

MOBILE, Ala. – Following their opening round of the season, the Sam Houston women's golf team is in third place after the team fired an opening round 3-under at the USA Intercollegiate.

The Kats shot a 285 on Sunday at the Par 72 Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course and are five shots back of the leaders South Florida in the 17-team field.

Zulaikah Nasser lead the way for the Kats, shooting an opening round 68 and is tied for second place. Jennifer Herbst is just a shot back in fifth after a 69.

Nasser, starting on hole No. 10, got off to a hot start on the day. She birdied three of her first four holes and made the turn bogey-free at 5-under par. Herbst also got hot, with four birdies on holes 16 and 18 and then 1 and 2 after making the turn. A birdie at No. 8 got her to three under on the day.

Bearkat newcomer Audrey Haddad, playing as an individual, shot an even round 72 and is in a tie for 15^th.

Anna Takahashi was 1-over on her round and is in 25^th, while Leah Alberto and Viera Permata Rosada each shot a 75 and stand in a tie for 41^st place in the 95-plaer field.

The tournament will continue Tuesday for 18 more holes and finish with the final round on Wednesday.
