HARAHAN, La. — The Sam Houston bowling team just missed qualifying for the championship bracket at the Colonial Lanes Classic hosted by Tulane on Saturday.
The Bearkats went 3-2 again to finish day two 6-4 with 9,783 total pins which kept them in fifth place. Stephen F. Austin took the fourth and final spot in the championship bracket with 9,951 pins to finish behind North Carolina A&T at 10,193, University of Maryland Eastern Shore at 10,069 and Louisiana Tech at 10,017.
Elise Chambers led the Kats with a 200.02 average and finished the day 11th in the individual standings. Her best game came in the finale when she bowled a 236 to help Sam Houston to a 1,109-990 victory over SFA.
"On a good note, we ended the day well and capped it off with a big win that was much need over SFA," head coach Brad Hagen said. "On the flip side, we worked way too hard today for the results we got and still need to be better out of the gates. We still have an opportunity to climb the ladder and leave Harahan with a respectable record, but we need to be more disciplined in the fresh."
Denise Blankenzee also had a top 15 finish, coming in at 14th with a 196.40 average. Her best game also came against SFA where she rolled a 214.
Bea Hernandez finished the day with a 193 average with her top performance of 210 coming in the victory over SFA. Following a common theme, Kaia Gray bowled a 199 game against SFA to finish with a 187.8 average and Isabella Colon had the best round of the day with a 250 against the Lumberjacks.
The Kats also defeated Southern 927-789 and Texas Southern 937-765.
Sam Houston will face Tulane with the chance to advance to the third-place game on Sunday.
