Kats place 5th at Colonial Classic

HARAHAN, La. — The Sam Houston bowling team was able to avenge an earlier loss to Jackson State to place fifth overall on the final day of the Colonial Lanes Classic hosted by Tulane.

The Bearkats were in fifth heading into Sunday's best-of-seven matches and opened the day with a 4-1 victory over Tulane to setup a showdown with Stephen F. Austin with a chance to head to the third-place game. The Lumberjacks were able to pull out a 4-3 victory after Sam Houston rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the match on the strength of a 245 that led to back-to-back wins.

That set the stage for the Kats to face Jackson State, which defeated them in a traditional match on Saturday. Sam Houston made quick work of Jackson State, winning 4-0 with scores of 206-176, 198-147, 234-176 and 222-197.

"Today we were a lot more efficient and as a team a lot more competitively cohesive," head coach Brad Hagen said. "We certainly need to clean up the items from this weekend, but we're very close to being where we need to be. We could have easily gotten to double digits this weekend and been more in contention had we taken care of a few more routine items. We'll certainly use the next 10 days to tighten things up and strategically get closer to where we need to be."

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore won the championship with Louisiana Tech finishing second, SFA third and North Carolina A&T fourth.

The Bearkats will be back in action when they host the TRACK Kat Clash at the Emerald Bowl in Houston on Nov. 4-6.
