Kats show well at Bearkat Invitational

HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston Bearkat tennis team claimed titles in four brackets on its home courts this weekend, closing out the fall season at the Aramark Bearkat Invitational.

Megan Basson and Linn Svaerd each won three straight singles matches to take the championship in both Flights A and D, while doubles flights A and C also went to the Kats.

Basson did not drop a set in her three matches, taking down opponents from Lamar, UTSA and SFA for first in the top draw of the event. She was joined in the bracket by Paula Cerda who dropped each of her first two matches before defeating Tyler Junior College's Zo Spyrou in straight sets on the consolation side.

Svaerd made it through to the Flight D finals with straight-set victories over Yeva Kononovych (TJC) and Saga Koch (SFA) and took the opening set from Margarita Roshkoa (Lamar) in the finals before being pushed to a third-set tiebreaker where she finished the job, 10-7.

The Kats also showed well in doubles play with Basson/Cerda taking Flight A with a 6-2 win over Mukhutidinova/Weir (UTSA), and the duo of Anastasia Khoklova and Andjela Vidovic took Flight C with a 6-2 win over the duo from UTSA and a 6-3 victory over the pair from SFA.

Sam Houston also saw Vianne Schwab make the consolation finals in Singles Flight C, rebounding from a loss in Round 1 to post a win over Elena Rubio (Lamar) before falling to and Eva Beybach (Northwestern State).

Other singles wins include Vidovic making the Singles Flight B finals with wins over Saloni Tamang (Lamar) and Magda Tuelis (UTSA), while Sahithi Vutukuru downed SFA's Jemma Cave in a tiebreak in the opening round of the same bracket.
