Kats shut out at Southern Utah

CEDAR CITY, Utah — Southern Utah scored four minutes into the match and that would prove to be enough as the Thunderbirds defeated the Sam Houston soccer team 2-0 on Sunday.

With the loss, the Bearkats fell to 3-8-2 overall and 2-5-1 in Western Athletic Conference play. Southern Utah is now 9-2-1 on the season and 4-1-1 in league action.

Whitney Wangsgard gave the Thunderbirds the lead with a goal in the fourth minute, her sixth on the season. Sammie Sofonia made it 2-0 with a goal off keeper Tatum Krueger in the 33rd minute.

Sam Houston tightened up defensively and kept the Thunderbirds off the board the rest of the match as Krueger and goalkeeper Savannah Hall combined for seven saves, four in the first half for Krueger and three for Hall in the second.

The Bearkats could not find a way to break the Thunderbird defense despite getting a combined seven shots on goal by Katarina Baehren, Landri Townsend, Kennedy Baquero, Kailey Pena, Dana Hanson and Pam Murray.

Sam Houston returns home to face New Mexico State on Saturday at noon. It will be Senior Day for the Bearkats.
