HUNTSVILLE – A six-run first inning was too much for the Sam Houston Bearkats to overcome on Saturday in a 6-5 loss to Dayton on the second day of the Bearkat Classic at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
The Kats (1-2) committed a trio of fielding miscues in the opening frame, leading to all six of the Flyers' (1-3) runs. Sam Houston got a run back in the second and two more in the third before a 110-minute weather delay halted play. They got a 2-run homer from
Elia Hebel in the bottom of the seventh, but could not get any closer as UD reliever Sarah Bailitz took care of the final 4.1 innings for her first win of the weekend.
Sam Houston finished with seven hits in the game, but only a double by
Brodie Quinlan going for extra bases before Hebel's late homer.
Regan Dunn took the loss, allowing all six runs – just three earned – in the opening frame before giving way to
Brailey Wasik who struck out four Flyers in 4.1 innings of relief before
Mika Vento went the final 2.0 frames to end it.
The Kats will look to get back to even for the weekend on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. against Wichita State in the finale of the Bearkat Classic.
