ABILENE – Faith Cook hit the 1,000-point mark for her career and the Sam Houston women's basketball team put five players in double figures, but Abilene Christian was on fire offensively and snapped the Bearkats' 7-game win streak with an 88-71 win on Thursday night at the Teauge Center.
The win sweeps the season series in favor of the Wildcats (16-9, 8-6 WAC) and came on a night that ACU hit 55.4 percent of its shots from the floor and nine 3-point baskets, led by 24 points by Jamie Bonnarens.
Cook entered the night needing 14 points to reach the 1,000-point mark for her Bearkat career and reached that mark in the third quarter on her fifth triple of the night, also reaching double figures for the eighth straight game. She is the 19
th player in program history to reach the mark.
She led five Kats (12-13, 7-7 WAC) in double figures with 15 points coming on five 3-point buckets of her own.
Raanee Smith also hit 6-for-7 from the floor and finished with a season-best 14 points and five rebounds, and
Kaylee Jefferson had 14 points and four boards.
Courtney Cleveland and
Damaya Telemaque also finished with 10 points each; however, it was not enough against an ACU squad that also forced 26 Bearkat turnovers and turned them into 34 points.
The Kats will now return home on Saturday to host UTRGV in a game set for a 2:00 p.m. start time on ESPN+. Sam Houston will put on the pink jerseys for the game vs the Vaqueros for the team's annual Play4Kay game, promoting breast cancer awareness.
